First snowfall expected today…
I heard an old wives tale about the first snowfall that has made me hopeful for this winter, let me tell you about it. Today’s date is November 9th, 2025 which according to this old wives tale, the date of which the first snowfall happens, that is the amount of days we will have snow. So November 9th = 9 days of snowfall.
How today started… My mom and I take shifts of having responsibility for our shared three horses. She is in charge of the morning chores since I moved out of my parents house. She feeds and turns out the critter including the momma barn cat, and our small flock of chickens, along with our three horses. I am responsible for the evenings which includes cleaning stalls, cleaning water buckets and refilling those, feeding hay and grain, and lastly brining in horses and locking the chickens up for the night. On the days I have off from my “big girl job” I will sometimes go turn horses out if mom has other obligations like her “big girl job”.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not dissing her job or mine, both allow us to pay for this dream of ours of having our own horses so I am thankful for that. This year has been extremely trying for me with all of the changes there has been to what I thought life would look like for me in the future so I am trying to get back to loving what I have been blessed with by God.
If you don’t know our “story” then let me give you a little insight. Both of my parents grew up with horses and even both sets of their parents before them had horses growing up, so basically we are addicts without having substances involved… unless you consider horses substances. While I was growing up, I spent a majority of my time away from my home at my grandparents houses- free babysitting with the only downside being that all of our grandparents spoiled the crap out of us in their own ways. My dad’s parents were special to me because they had the horses. When I say that, I mean they probably had around 3-4 mares that were broodmares, those broodmares babies, and the one lone dopey gelding that was frankly crippled but he had PERSONALITY to spare so they kept him around for entertainment. So for a little horse crazy girl, this was my absolute heaven.
Fast forward through one of those old horses having a surprise baby, some getting sold, one getting bought at an auction and some old ones making it to heaven with their tales missing- you have where we are at today. Oh and that surprise baby having a baby of her own who is SPOILED.. You also run into grandparents aging, one passing leaving the other to deal with an entire horse property by themselves, although they had help from children and grandchildren. We ended up in our situation because of these circumstances, but we are making the best of it for now.
If you didn’t know, our property was sold in August of this year and the new owner graciously is letting grandpa and our critters hang out for another year so they can get some of their things together to get their current home sold so I am taking advantage of the fact that grandpa is paying the rent of the property that way I can out my pennies away to hopefully save enough for a down payment on a few acres that we can take our crew to and I can keep on dreaming of my own ponies, on my own place, and maybe even have my own business there in a different scale of what we are doing here now.
So with the first snowfall expected today we are taking advantaged of our hopefully only 9 days of snow this winter, and that we can spend less time breaking frozen water up, clearing snow, and dealing with wet blankets and more time enjoying what God has put on our hearts with taking care of these creatures.
