Trying new things.
Since the new year rolled over, Fern and I have been trying some new things in addition to our practice with the surcingle. We have tried out a nice and simple bridle set up that has an o-ring. Honestly, I have to say I was very impressed with the little miss, she took the bit in her mouth the first night and gave absolutely no objections. She acts like a broke horse already!
Since the first night we tried it out, we have worked our way up to eating dinner with it on, just trying to let her get used to it being in her mouth. She doesn’t mind it one “bit”.. Pun intended!
I think the next thing on my list is to find a pony girth for my lighter saddle so I can let her wear that around for a few ground work sessions. I am holding off on that for the moment because I think she needs to get a little taller before I swing a leg over. Right now she is actually going through a growth spurt, in the hind end at least. When I measured her last month she was about 13.1-13.2hh and just the other night she sticked at 13.3hh at the hip. Unfortunately her withers aren’t catching up yet so I will wait a few more months to hop on her the first time.
I really want to get some more ground work under our belts before our first ride, our weather is what my restriction has been. That and daylight hours this time of year. I also know from my experience with Buster that falling off on frozen ground HURTS!
